Today St Mary’s, tomorrow the Premiership?

Almost 100 children took part in a Year 4 tournament and a Year 5 tournament at the inaugural Aireborough Learning Partnership Trust football competition held recently at St Mary’s, Mentson.  Despite the variable spring weather there were lots of excellent skills and endeavor on display at an event enjoyed by everyone.

Both competitions were run on a league basis and featured mixed gender six-a-side teams. Benton Park Year 12 students had helped to organise and run the day as an integral part of their BTec course. Thanks to their efforts and refereeing skills we saw great attacking, resolute defending and some fantastic goal scoring celebrations – clearly some of the participants had been spending a lot of time on choreography!

Both leagues were closely contested but at the final reckoning the Year 4 competition was won by Yeadon Westfield Junior School with Rawdon Littlemoor School as runners-up. Fir Year 5 the winners were Rawdon Littlemoor School with Rufford Park School finishing as close runners-up.

Alison Anslow, Chair of the ALPT commented, ‘The event went well and all of the children seemed to very much enjoy themselves irrespective of the results. I think it was a great way of bringing many of the Trust’s schools together and very much promoted the feeling of a wider community. There was a good atmosphere and lots of smiling faces so I hope that we have started something that we can build on over the coming years.’
